"Nobody eats alone" - Food stalls distribute free food - Berlin’s Christmas meal initiative feeds and warms 400 in need

A free Christmas meal was served to hundreds of struggling Berlin residents on December 24. The initiative, called Keiner isst allein (No One Eats Alone), took place at Leopoldplatz and offered hot food, drinks, and even clothing to those in need. Local snack bars and volunteers came together to support the event after a last-minute menu change due to permit issues.

The idea came from Hakan Mamout-Oglou, owner of Fly Döner in Reinickendorf. Inspired by Berlin entertainer Frank Zander’s long-running Christmas charity meals, Mamout-Oglou wanted to create a similar gathering for the community. Originally, the plan was to serve döner kebabs, but licensing problems forced a switch to goulash, rice, bean soup, and salad instead.

Around 400 people turned up at Leopoldplatz on Christmas Eve. Food was provided by nearby döner and burger stands, while volunteers handed out warm drinks and winter clothing. The event also included basic medical care for attendees. Beyond just feeding people, organisers made sure to sit down and talk with guests, offering companionship as well as meals. The success of this year’s event has encouraged the team to plan more gatherings. Another meal could take place in just a few weeks, ensuring the support continues beyond the festive season.

The Keiner isst allein initiative brought together local businesses and volunteers to help hundreds on Christmas Eve. With plans to expand in the near future, the project aims to keep providing food, warmth, and conversation to Berlin’s most vulnerable residents.
