Berlin's Barther Straße Housing Project Divides Residents and Politicians
The city government of Neu-Hohenschönhausen has thrown its weight behind a housing project on Barther Straße, while also considering further improvements. However, the plan has sparked controversy, with residents, local politicians, and even political parties expressing concerns and criticisms.
The project, supported by HOWOGE, aims to provide affordable housing with half of the apartments earmarked for subsidized units. It also includes plans for a daycare center and a community hub. The city government defends the project as a step towards sustainable housing in Berlin, using hybrid timber construction and meeting the KfW-40 energy efficiency standard.
However, the plan has not been without opposition. Residents and local politicians fear the loss of vital green spaces and community areas. The Lichtenberg district faction of Die Linke has sharply criticized the proposal, labeling it as an example of a 'build, build, build' mentality. The district administration has also raised concerns, warning that further densification could diminish residents’ quality of life. Meanwhile, CDU representatives have demanded greater transparency and public involvement in such large-scale projects.
The conflict over Barther Straße highlights the challenges facing Berlin’s urban planning, balancing densification, climate protection, and social responsibility. HOWOGE plans to build three eight-story buildings, accommodating around 180 apartments. As the city government considers proposing further changes to improve the project, all parties involved await a resolution that addresses the diverse concerns and needs of the community.
