Ball des Sports celebrates 55 years of shaping German athletics in Frankfurt
Europe's most prestigious sports charity event, the Ball des Sports, returned for its 55th edition in Frankfurt. Held at the Festhalle, the gala celebrated athletes while raising funds for future stars. This year's ceremony also honoured biathlon legend Fritz Fischer for his lifetime achievements.
The event has deep roots in Hesse, with Wiesbaden hosting the very first Ball des Sports decades ago. Since then, the location has shifted between cities, including multiple stints in Frankfurt.
The Ball des Sports has long been a cornerstone of support for German athletes. Every one of the 184 team members heading to the Milan/Cortina 2026 Olympics had previously received backing from Sports Aid. On average, the foundation had funded their training and careers for nearly nine years before the Games.
This year's event thrived on its mix of formal awards and informal exchanges. Between speeches and performances, athletes from different generations mingled, sharing stories and advice. The atmosphere highlighted the event's role in uniting past and present sports stars.
Fritz Fischer took centre stage as he received the Golden Sports Pyramid. Known for his unmatched speed and precision, Fischer once set a record by firing five biathlon shots in just 5.8 seconds. His career has left a lasting mark on the sport.
Frankfurt hosted the gala for the 11th time, though the Festhalle replaced the Jahrhunderthalle as this year's venue. The choice of location has become a recurring debate, with both Frankfurt and Wiesbaden vying to secure future editions. Political discussions now surround where the 2025 event will take place.
A total of €7.9 million has been invested in preparing Germany's athletes for Milan/Cortina. The funds cover training, equipment, and travel, ensuring competitors can focus on performance.
The Ball des Sports continues to shape German athletics by funding careers and honouring excellence. With €7.9 million already allocated for 2026, the foundation's impact remains clear. Meanwhile, the host city for next year's event stays undecided, leaving Frankfurt and Wiesbaden in competition once more.
