Baden-Württemberg’s Taste the South Network Celebrates 26 Years of Regional Culinary Excellence

Baden-Württemberg’s culinary scene continues to thrive through the Taste the South network, a long-standing initiative now in its 26th year. The programme connects nearly 270 restaurants, hotels, and corporate dining facilities, all committed to using locally sourced, traceable ingredients. A recent highlight includes the recognition of two establishments with the prestigious Three Lions award for their outstanding regional cuisine.

The Taste the South project began over a quarter of a century ago to promote Baden-Württemberg’s food culture. Participating chefs follow strict rules, ensuring dishes feature regional products, particularly those certified by the state’s quality assurance schemes. Regular inspections maintain these high standards.

The initiative expanded in 2017 with Taste the South – Dining Away from Home, extending its focus to off-premises catering. This branch emphasises the same principles: traceable ingredients and support for local producers. The growth of this sector has further strengthened the region’s food economy.

Among the standout participants, the Herzogskelter Hotel & Restaurant blends traditional flavours with international influences. Meanwhile, Aramark GmbH’s corporate dining at Bechtle AG also earned the Three Lions distinction. Both locations exemplify the programme’s dedication to quality and regional identity.

The annual Gourmet Guide profiles these establishments, spotlighting their menus and the farmers, butchers, and artisans behind their ingredients. By prioritising local sourcing, the network helps sustain Baden-Württemberg’s agricultural and culinary heritage.

The Taste the South network now includes 270 venues, from fine dining to workplace canteens, all united by a focus on regional excellence. The Three Lions awards and ongoing expansion of the Dining Away from Home initiative reflect its lasting impact on the area’s food culture. The programme’s success continues to rely on transparency, quality, and strong ties to local producers.
