Alexandria Residents Get Free Rides Home for Safe Halloween
Alexandria residents can enjoy a safe Halloween weekend this year, thanks to a regional initiative combating drunk driving. The Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP) will offer free rides home during Halloween weekend, from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m. on both Friday, Oct. 31, and Saturday, Nov. 1.
Last October, over 735 people in the Washington metropolitan area took advantage of WRAP's Halloween SoberRide program. This year, the service will expand its hours and operate throughout the region, including Alexandria. The SoberRide code will be posted at 3 p.m. on Oct. 31 at SoberRide.com. Residents aged 21 and older can receive free transportation home, up to $15 per ride, using the Lyft app.
Statistics show the importance of such programs. In 2022, 54% of drunk driving crashes on U.S. roadways during Halloween involved drivers aged 21 to 34. Nationally, more than one-third of traffic deaths on Halloween involve impaired drivers, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Since 1991, WRAP's SoberRide program has provided over 95,000 free safe rides home to would-be drunk drivers in the greater Washington area.
WRAP's SoberRide program is not limited to Halloween. It also operates on Super Bowl Sunday, St. Patrick's Day, Cinco de Mayo, Independence Day, and during the winter holidays through New Year's. One free ride offer per user is available while supplies last. Alexandria residents are encouraged to take advantage of this service to ensure a safe and responsible Halloween weekend.
