Alexandria Residents Demand End to Sheriff's ICE Cooperation Amid Surge in Arrests

Alexandria, Virginia, has seen a spike in ICE raids since President Trump's inauguration in January 2025, with local arrest rates surging by over 350%. Residents and city officials are pushing back against Sheriff Sean Casey's voluntary collaboration with ICE, demanding an end to transfers and holds on immigrants.

Alexandria residents, including Reverend Alyssa Aldape, have shared personal stories illustrating the impact of the sheriff's policies on immigrant families. Since August 2025, Sheriff Casey has transferred 40 people to ICE custody, with 35 transfers occurring in the first half of the year. The city has experienced at least two significant ICE raids, where people were taken from their jobs and homes.

Mayor Alyia Gaskins supports exploring ICE-free zone policies, similar to those in Illinois, if the city has the authority. More than a dozen residents have demanded that the City Council publicly condemn Sheriff Casey's cooperation with ICE. The coalition demands an end to ICE holds, courtesy calls, and all voluntary transfers to ICE custody by the sheriff's office. Councilman Canek Aguirre will explore options for an ICE-free zone resolution with the City Attorney's office, but cautioned that such measures may be preempted by the Dillon Rule. Since 2022, several Virginia cities and sheriffs have declined cooperation with ICE detainer requests, including Fairfax County Sheriff Stacey Kincaid.

Alexandria residents and officials are calling for an end to Sheriff Sean Casey's voluntary collaboration with ICE, citing the detrimental impact on immigrant families and the community. While exploring ICE-free zone policies, they acknowledge potential legal hurdles posed by the Dillon Rule. The city's ICE arrest rate has increased significantly since President Trump took office, highlighting the urgent need for change.
