6G4Society Launches to Ensure Next-Gen Networks Align with European Values
The 6G4Society project, focused on the societal aspects of future 6G technology, has launched its activities. It aims to integrate societal, environmental, and economic values into the development of 6G, ensuring it aligns with European values of inclusivity, trust, and sustainability.
At the heart of 6G4Society lies the Citizen Survey, which gathered diverse European perspectives on expectations, fears, and hopes surrounding the next generation of networks. The project introduces the Acceptance Models of 6G Technology framework to assess how new technologies resonate with ethical norms and public trust. It promotes the concept of Key Value Indicators (KVIs) and Key Sustainability Indicators (KSIs) to measure dimensions such as energy use, material circularity, fairness, inclusiveness, and trust.
The project works to create synergies across European research and innovation initiatives to mainstream social acceptability and sustainability. It explores how 6G can align with these values and contributes to policy integration by mapping how societal values intersect with existing and emerging legislative frameworks. Environmental responsibility emerged as a unifying priority, with younger participants particularly aware of societal and environmental implications.
The 6G4Society project seeks to develop practical tools and frameworks that make social acceptability and sustainability measurable and actionable. By doing so, it aims to ensure that 6G technology development considers the needs and values of European society, fostering a sustainable and inclusive future.
