2026 Global Poker Awards Cancelled After Historic Wins in 2025
The 2026 Global Poker Awards have been called off, marking the first time the event will not take place. Organisers confirmed the decision but gave no indication of who might revive the ceremony in future. The move follows a year of major wins, including historic firsts for Asian and female players in 2025.
Punnat Punsri made headlines in 2025 by becoming the first Asian player to win the Global Poker Index (GPI) Player of the Year title. His success came after earning nearly $11 million on the live poker circuit that year. The Thai player also retained his country’s National Player of the Year award, solidifying his dominance in the region.
Kristen Foxen took the top spot as the 2025 GPI Female Player of the Year. She remains the leading woman on the Women’s All-Time Money List, further cementing her reputation in the game. Meanwhile, Omar Lakhdari was named the 2025 GPI Mid-Major Player of the Year, adding another name to the year’s list of high achievers. Eric Danis, President of GPI and The Hendon Mob Database, explained that other projects were taking priority over the 2026 awards. Despite the cancellation, no official body has claimed responsibility for ending the event. Some industry figures have suggested that alternative poker awards could emerge in its place.
The absence of the 2026 Global Poker Awards leaves a gap in the poker calendar. The 2025 season saw record-breaking performances, including Punsri’s historic win and Foxen’s continued success. With no clear plans for a replacement, the future of poker’s annual recognition remains uncertain.
